Fireball Data Workshop (FireWorks) Preceding the International Meteor Conference 2010

Date
15-16 September 2010

Location
Armagh Observatory (library)

Rationale
Many amateur and some professional astronomy groups all over the world have web pages where they collect fireball observations. Only a very small number of these pages allows searching of the archives - and all of them are different. As part of the discussions about the Virtual Meteor Observatory of the IMO, a discussion started about how to proceed in the future. Also, as part of ESA's Space Situational Awareness programme, ESA has a requirement "to provide a database of fireball observations brighter than -10 mag", which requires some more coordination between data collection systems.

This workshop intends to bring together some of the key players, in Europe and hopefully across the world, who are involved in running a system to collect fireball information. The goal is to exchange experience and know-how on how to best set up such a database. For this, we solicit presentations on existing fireball collecting forms and summaries of the experience/feedback from users of these pages. We then want to focus on open discussions about how to optimize the collection forms and how to coordinate the existing pages. The long-term goal could be to have one (possibly distributed) database for all bright fireball events across the world.

Organizing committee
Detlef Koschny, Maria Gritsevich (ESA/RSSD)
Apostolos Christou, Mark Bailey, Geert Barentsen (Armagh Observatory)

How to apply?
To apply for this workshop, please send an e-mail to Maria Gritsevich (mgritsev-at-rssd.esa.int) with copy to Detlef Koschny (detlef.koschny-at-esa.int) and Apostolos Christou (aac-at-arm.ac.uk) describing your current activities and (if applicable) the title of any talk you would like to contribute and/or important discussion points which you would like to raise. Participation to the workshop is free but participants need to make their own accommodation arrangements. Low cost accommodation is available in the local Youth Hostel and other options are also available (contact us for further information). The number of workshop places is limited.
