EUROPLANET N3 strategic workshop on Meteor Orbit Determination (MOD)
MOD - Monday, 11 Sep 2006 to Wednesday, 13 Sep 2006 - First Announcement
This is a first announcement of a meteor orbit workshop, taking place just before the next International Meteor Conference in the 'Groepsaccommodatie de Hullen', Roden, The Netherlands, from Monday, 11 Sep 2006, 10 h, to Wednesday, 13 Sep 2006, 18 h. The contact person is Detlef Koschny. This workshop is organised as a EUROPLANET N3 strategic workshop.
So far, the determination of meteor orbits was mainly the domain of a few advanced research groups observing meteors with photographic techniques. Recently, more and more video camera networks appear, e.g. in Germany, the Netherlands, in Spain, Poland, Ireland, and others. These networks start to contribute to regular meteor orbit determinations. Many parallel groups are working on developing the required software for that. The aim of this workshop is to bring together all these groups and share the computational methods for determining meteor orbits. In detail, the workshop will have these goals:
  1. Get acquainted with the methodology of determining meteor orbits from photographic and video meteor observations;
  2. Present currently existing codes to determine orbits and their peculiarities;
  3. Compare the existing codes;
  4. Define a standard for input and output of the data
  5. Discuss the common orbit database;
  6. Discuss future coordinated observations.
We will ask a few people to present the work they have already done. We mainly expect participants that already work in the area of orbit determination, but of course newcomers are welcome. You should have background in programming and understanding of orbital dynamics.
Interested people should send a 'declaration of interest' until 28 Feb 2006 to Detlef Koschny. Please use the subject line 'MOD: Declaration of interest' and state in the body of the email:
  1. Your name and address
  2. Your previous involvement in double station observations and/or orbit determination of meteors
  3. How sure are you that you will participate?
  4. Possible presentation
  5. Other comments
After that, a more detailed program will be produced.
The costs will be 120 Euros, this includes meals and accommodation. Note that currently it is not foreseen to fund travel for participants.
